Deadlines
In order for the Department of Computer Science to process your application materials in time for admission before a given semester, all application materials must be received by February 1st for the Fall semester and by October 1st for the Spring semester.
Application Fees
A nonrefundable $50 fee must accompany the application sent to the Graduate School. Unfortunately, this application fee cannot be waived. Application materials can not be evaluated or processed by the Department of Computer Science or the Graduate School until this fee has been received.
Acceptance Criteria
All applicants for the Master of Science in computer science are expected to have completed undergraduate courses in data structures, programming language representations, foundations of computer theory, and operating systems. Applicants to the doctoral program must have completed a bachelor's degree in computer science or a closely related discipline at an accredited university or college.
The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is required of all applicants. A minimum combined score (verbal and quantitative) of 900 for master's applicants and 1000 for doctoral applicants is required. To be considered for admission to graduate study in the department, applicants must achieve a high score on the quantitative portion of the general examination, in addition to meeting the combined score requirements .
The GRE requirement may be waived at the option of the Department if you have a graduate degree from an accredited institution. Advanced tests in computer science or mathematics are not required for admission. Students whose native language is not English must also complete the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a score of at least 550 on the paper based TOEFL; 213 on the computerized test including a 58 or better in section 1-Reading; 80 for the Internet based TOEFL (iBT) including a score of 23 or better in section 1-Reading.
You must submit three letters of reference with original signatures that evaluate your potential for graduate study in computer science. If you wish to pursue a Ph.D., the letters should address your ability to pursue quality original research. Letters should also evaluate your oral and written communication skills, particularly if you are applying for financial aid.
